Direct Passages!

- Stefan leaned against the window, his forehead pressed to its coolness. His tutor had had another saying: Evil will never find peace. It may triumph, but it will never find peace. (Page 21)

I chose this passage because it shows how evil influences everything in the story and how evil can never rest. Damon is the character who represents evil in the story and he never gives up trying to break Elena & Stefan up.

-Slowly he turned and raised his head. His eyes were bleak, sightless, and something twisted in Elena at the pain she saw on his face. (Page 67)I chose this passage because to me it sounded dark and mysterious and helps you feel the pain.

- Elena couldn't breath. He was standing so close, close enough to touch. She could smell a faint hint of cologne and the leather of his jacket. And his eyes still held hers-she could not look away from then they where like no eyes she had ever seen, black as midnight, the pupils dialed like a cats. They filled her vision and leaned toward her, bending his head down to hers, She felt her own eyes half close, losing focus. She felt her head tilt back and her lips part. (Page 92)I chose his passage because it describes Damon really well and shows how much he wants Elena, and how Elena feels.

- He was looking at her oddly, with an expression she couldn't understand. It was a mixture of annoyance and grudging respect-and something else. Something hot and fierce that frightened her in a a different way. He waited until her hand was on the doorknob to answer, and his voice was soft but serious, with no trace of amusement. "Perhaps I've already found her...Elena" (Page 93)
I chose this passage because it shows that Stefan is a serious person but dose have some feeling for Elena but don't know how to show them because he always held everything in.

- Elena's heart was pounding. This was no longer a crowd; it was a mob. She was terrified of what they would to Stefan if they did find him. But if she tried to go warn him, she would lead Tyler right to him. She looked around desperately. Bonnie was still staring into Mr. Tanners dead face. No help there. She turned to scan the crowd again and her eyes met Matt's. (Page 113)

I chose this passage because it shows some excitement and mystery and how Elena is scared and worried for Stefan.

Book Review

The Awakening the first of the four novels that L.J. Smith has made popular in the Vampire Diaries series. He wrote it for the Young Adult market and was originally published in the 1990’s, The Vampire Diaries were re-released by HarperTeen in 2007 as a result of the flurry of popularity that Young Adult vampire genre novels have received since Stephen Meyer’s huge success with the Twilight series. The Vampire Diaries were popular at the time of the original release but seemed to have gathered a new following several years later with a bunch of new teen fans.

The Vampire Diaries is a tale of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them. Elena, the golden girl, the leader, the one who can have any boy she wants. Stefan, brooding and mysterious, who seems to be the only one who can resist Elena, even as he struggles to protect her from the horrors that haunt his past.
Damon, sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him. Who is determined to have Elena, he’d kill to possess her.

Elena, the protagonist of this story, returns home from her European vacation at the start of a new school year. Elena shakes off any dark feelings as she returns to school and takes back her rightful place at the top of the school’s social hierarchy. This year the school has a new student, the mysterious Stefan Salvatore, transferred from Italy and looking hot in his designer Italian cloths. Driving a Porsche and having a man of mystery vibe going for him, he seems to be irresistible to Elena, even though he is standoffish and always gets her attention. Elena, determined to have him at any cost, plots and plans with her girlfriends, ways to get Stefan. While she is busy plotting, a number of strange attacks occur in Fell’s Church that increase’s the sense of mysteries in the story.

L.J. Smith’s use of exploring the deadly love triangle that occurs between Elena, Stefan and Damon, Stefan’s black sheep vampire brother. The Awakening ends on a cliff hanger and events which lead up to the end of the story which suggest that Elena may find that she doesn’t always get everything she wants even if she thinks she is entitled to it. For me, the most interesting character is Damon because he’s mysterious, dangerous, and is driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan.

I recommend this book for teens, I know that most teens don't really like reading, but neither do I and I found this book very mysterious, and I loved how there was a love triangle it gave the book a suspense that I have been trying to find in other books that I couldn't find.

Themes

1. If you’re popular and pretty people will like you. But I think that it’s kinda over rated cause most popular, pretty girls are stuck up and mean. Why? Because I see a lot of what they do to people when teachers are not looking. They make fun and mimic people trying to act cool in front of people. To me that's rude and immature and should be no need of it.

2. A love hate relationship can never work. Elena love’s Stefan but hates what he dose and i’m pretty sure she hates what he is. To me in this book she is confused rather she can be with Stefan because of what he dose.

Setting

This series takes place in Mystic Falls,Virginia, a fictional town haunted by supernatural beings. The main point of the series is the love triangle between the protagonist Elena Gilbert, and Stefan Salvatore, and Damon Salvatore, all of them have dark pasts. Later light is thrown on the mysterious past of the town involving Elena's malevolent Katherine Pierce who seeks revenge against the town, Stefan, Damon, and Elena.
